Welsh Butchers Meat With Success in Top Awards
Welsh butchers scooped some of the industry’s top prizes in London this week, at the prestigious Butchers’ Shop of the Year awards.
Several members of Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC)’s Butchers’ Club were up for awards. The prize for the best butcher’s shop in Wales was won by Edwards of Conwy while Peter Rushforth, of Swan’s Farm Shop near Mold, was named Young Butcher of the Year.
2016 has been a year to remember for Peter. He has qualified for the final of the Worldskills UK butchery competition, and at the Royal Welsh Show Peter was named as the winner of one of the prestigious HCC scholarships for 2016-17. The HCC scholarship helps individuals who work within the Welsh red meat sector to travel abroad to learn more about their trade, and apply the lessons at home to boost the industry. Peter will be travelling to north America early in 2017.
Among the other Welsh butchers who reached the final shortlists were Bodnant Welsh Food from near Llandudno, in the Farm Shop category; and Martin Player of Cardiff and N.S. James and Son of Raglan, both in the Wales butcher shop category.
Melanie Cargill, HCC’s Market Development Officer, presented the Welsh Butcher Shop prize at the event, held at the Banking Hall in London.
“These are very important awards which recognize excellence in the meat industry,” said Melanie, “I was delighted to see so many members of the HCC Butchers’ Club nominated for awards this year, and many congratulations to Ieuan Edwards and his team in Conwy, and also to our HCC Scholar Peter Rushforth.”
“So many independent butchers are leading the way in developing new products for consumers,” Melanie added. “HCC is proud to work with them to market the very best of PGI Welsh Lamb, PGI Welsh Beef, and pork from Wales.”
