On 30 July 2018, amendments to EU TSE legislation came into force, relaxing Specified Risk Material (SRM) controls on small ruminants, giving Member States more flexibility in determining the ages of sheep at slaughter for the purposes of SRM removal.

The Hygiene legislation previously allowed the UK to transport meat before it has been chilled at a slaughterhouse, if this meat was intended to produce specific products and if authorised by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
